Organic Natural Skin Care Products: How to Tell the Genuine from the Imposters

Have you ever thought you were using organic natural skin care products, only to flip around the bottle and realise that there were synthetic chemicals or potential toxins in your products?

Unfortunately, just using a product with the word "organic" or "natural" in it doesn't mean that your products are actually safe.

Industry Standards: What Does "Organic" and "Natural" Really Mean on a Label?

The problem when you're trying to buy organic natural skin care products is that the terms "organic" and "natural" are virtually unregulated in the cosmetics industry.

The term "natural" is actually completely unregulated.  While it sometimes does mean that a product is actually safer and more natural, legally it means nothing at all.

I got tricked by the "Naturals" line of one of the big-name cosmetics companies a few years ago.

One of my little twinsies has especially sensitive skin, so we had switched all of our products over certified organic, actually naturally and actually super healthy products.

But one night, over at a friend's house, we popped the kids in the bath and gave them this fun "Naturals" bath paint.

Well, poor little twinsie broke out in a rash.  And when I checked the label, there was actually nothing natural about the product.

Good branding.  Poor product.

The same goes for the term "organic".

Legally, "organic" just means "containing carbon".  And some companies even create their own organic certification, so that they are entirely self-regulated, the product never being tested by an independent body.

And "made with organic ingredients" is even worse.

Maybe your product is packed full of synthetic surfactants, parabens, artificial dyes and fragrances, but it contains organic shea butter.  So it's "made with organic ingredients".

Best Organic Natural Skin Care Products

The best organic natural skin care products out there are the ones that are CERTIFIED organic by a third party body.

Certification itself doesn't necessarily mean that your product are really organic and actually natural.  Believe it or not, some companies will actually create their own certification standards and self-regulate.

Sure, these products might actually be organic and totally safe, but they might not.  Unless you know how to read your labels, you don't really know.

So you've got 2 options if you want to be using the best organic natural skin care products out there:

  1. Learn to read your labels.
  2. Buy a product that is certified organic by a third party body with high standards.

The two regulating bodies with highest product standards out there are the ACO (Australian Certified Organic) and USDA (United States Department of Agriculture).

My absolute FAVOURITE brand of certified organic natural skin care products is Miessence Certified Organics.  There are no ingredients that don't come from nature; nothing you can't pronounce; and most of there products are certified food grade organic.

That means that it's so safe and that you eat them.
