Organic Raw Vegan Protein Powder

heart in blueberries

I've been using an organic raw vegan protein powder in my smoothies for years (and in my kids' smoothies too).

We've tried a handful of different protein powders in this household, and we found a few that we like, but the organic + raw + vegan one that we're hooked on now is hands down the best option.

(No added sugar or artificial sweeteners, no whey.  Just good stuff.)

Now I even sneak it into things like pancakes, cookies, and muffins.  (Because my kids are carb addicts and it sneak some protein into their diet.)

Let's take a minute to talk about protein powder and why you may want to go organic + raw + vegan.  (And please, throw out the whey!)

Benefits of Organic Raw Vegan Protein Powder

  • Raw vegan protein contains high levels of branched-chain amino acids to help boost the immune system and increase the production of glutathione, a natural antioxidant.
  • Raw protein is absorbed rapidly in the intestines (helps with quick recovery after a workout).
  • Although whey protein is great for building muscle, some people may suffer from allergies to whey. It can cause gas or bloating for people with milk or other similar allergies.
  • Other protein powders may have gluten in them to help you feel fuller, but plant-based protein powder is often gluten free and hypoallergenic.
  • Eating more plant-based protein helps boost your metabolism and helps keep you feeling fuller longer.
  • No growth hormones or antibiotics.  (Livestock are often treated with growth hormones and antibiotics. This can easily translate into whey protein powders.)
  • Manufacturing plant-based protein powder requires less land, water, and other resources than would be required for animal protein (like whey).
  • Organic protein powder has no GMOs and no pesticide residues to worry about.

No whey!

Whey protein is one of the most popular when it comes to protein powders.  But you may want to reconsider your whey...

Some scary side effects of whey protein listed by the Mayo Clinic:

Whey protein may cause abnormal heart rhythms, changes in cholesterol levels, headache, increased diabetes risk, increased fracture or osteoporosis risk, kidney dysfunction, liver damage, stomach or intestine symptoms (acid reflux, bloating, constipation, cramps, gas, increased bowel movements, movement problems, nausea, reduced appetite, swelling of limbs, and upset stomach), and thirst.

The Mayo Clinic recommends that you avoid using whey protein long-term and in excessive amounts.

Avoid whey protein long term?  So that means that you shouldn't be putting it in your smoothies everyday....

Ingredients in Miessence certified organic protein powder...

Certified organic sprouted brown rice

Sprouted brown rice is not the same as regular brown rice. The protein source from whole brown rice is enzymatically extracted from multiple layers of the sprouted whole grain versus the more typical rice protein which is hexane-extracted from just the bran layer.

Sprouting increases key nutrients; particularly B vitamins, and essential amino acids often lacking in grains. The natural bio-fermentation process increases the whole grains natural nutrients availability, absorption and digestion.

Certified Organic Pea Protein

Peas are high in protein (approximately 90%) that is highly digestible, allowing for maximum absorbability. Pea protein is said to be one of the most perfect proteins for human consumption.

Pea protein does not require complicated extraction. The peas are dried naturally and ground to a flour, then it is hydrated, after which the starch and fibre are separated, followed by coagulation of the protein itself. After purification, a multi-stage dryer is then used to dry the protein and prepare it for consumption.

The sacha inchi plant grows sustainably in the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest and its modern rediscovery now provides income for indigenous tribes and contributes to the preservation of the Amazon rainforest.
