Where to Buy Natural Skin Care

Most skin care products contain synthetic chemicals that are suspected or even KNOWN to cause various health problems.  Everything from cancer to weight gain to diabetes could be traced back to what we put on our skin.

Why are there no many noxious chemicals in our skin care products?

While the FDA does regulate skin care products in the United States, the regulations are incredibly lax.  In fact, cosmetics companies are self-regulating and the regulations are completely voluntary.  What’s more is that safety tests on skin care and personal care products are done after a product goes to market.

And the situation isn’t much better in a lot of countries.  (My family and I live in Canada and we have to watch for parabens, phthalates, PEG compounds, etc., etc. in our products too.)

So that is why we decided to start buying natural skin care products.  In fact, we switch all of our skin care and personal care products to certified organic to make getting rid of synthetic chemicals and potential toxins incredibly easy.

Why Buy Natural Skin Care?

Before I started buying natural skin care products, and natural hair care products, I had extremely oily skin and lots of breakouts.  I had oily hair that was hard to manage.  And every time I wore makeup, it just made my skin problems worse.  Once I had kids, the problem got worse because they were getting rashes from all the synthetic junk in our non-organic products.

Once I learned about all the junk that goes into most skin care, hair care, and make up products, I quickly realized what was causing the problem: synthetic chemicals that were doing more harm than good.  Many cosmetics contain ingredients that are cosmedogenic (they clog your pores) and actually make oily skin and break outs worse.  And many skin care and hair care products contain cheap fillers and preservatives that mess with the pH balance of your skin and hair and otherwise just muck things up.  And my two poor little beans (the kids) were having allergic reactions to all the stuff that didn’t need to be in their baby products.

Once we switched to an all natural and organic brand, I swear ALL our skin problems (and my hair problems) went away.

But what’s even more important are all the effects that you don’t see.  Many ingredients in non-organic skin care products can seriously interfere with your body’s proper functioning.  Phthalates and parabens have been linked to cancer.  They are also endocrine disruptors (so is SLS) that can mess with your hormones and cause all sorts of things from sleep disorders to diabetes and heart disease.

It’s almost hard to believe that all these things can be caused by shower gel and moisturizer, but the fact is that what we put on our skin gets absorbed into our bloodstream faster than what we put in our mouths.  And the chemicals in the products that you put on your skin don’t get filtered out by your kidneys, as do any harmful things that you eat.

So if you wouldn’t eat the products you are using, why would you put them on your skin?

What You Need to Know Before You Buy Natural Skin Care Products

There are a few things that you should know before you buy natural skin care products.

  1. The term “natural” on a product means literally nothing.  The term is entirely unregulated and is often used as a marketing ploy on products that are far from natural.
  2. The term “organic” can also be misleading.  “Organic”, by industry standards, just means “containing carbon”.  So the term “organic” does not guarantee that your products are actually natural and organic either.
  3. There are 2 ways to make sure that you are buying actually natural skin care products: i) learn to read labels, or ii) buy products that are certified organic by a third party body like the ACO or the USDA.
